Obon Week - Day Seven - Hiroshima & Miyajima

We woke up early Friday morning and took the shinkansen (bullet train) from Shin Kobe to Hiroshima. I was really excited about the train ride! Once we got to Hiroshima (about two hours on the train), we went to Miyajima, and then Peace Park. We ate Hiroshima style okanomiyaki, and then came home! Whew! All in one day!

Shin Kobe shinkansen station.

Nozomi shinkansen (the fastest one) arriving.

They are pretty slick looking.

Mom and I on the shinkansen.

Our shinkansen tickets (one way).

View from the shinkansen window.

Once we arrived in Hiroshima, who should we see but Jen and her family!!! Dad, Me, Jennifer, Gordon, her brother Maxwell, and her mom Wendy.

Mom decided to buy a drink from a vending machine, using her play money.

Dad, in his Ray Bans, and me, in my Sea Witches, consulting a map of Hiroshima. On the train from Hiroshima to Miyajimaguchi.

Arriving at Miyajimaguchi.

Itsukushima, or Miyajima, the Shine Island.

On the ferry to the island.

Itsukushima Shrine. Quothe the all knowing Wikipedia, "The shrine is dedicated to the three daughters of the Shinto deity Susano-o no Mikoto, brother of the great sun deity, Amaterasu (the tutelary deity of the Imperial household). The first shrine buildings were probably erected in the 6th century, and the shrine has been destroyed many times. The present shrine dates from the mid-16th century, having been rebuilt in keeping with its earlier 12th century design."

Me, Dad, and Mom on the ferry to the island.

One of many gift shops on Miyajima.

Mom and Dad in the park on Miyajima.

I have no idea what that says.

Fried food vendor. Yum.

Mom being a sweetheart and shading Dad with her pretty parasol.

My Dad is a very handsome man.

My Mom is a cute woman.

Cute family.

I am responsible for Mom's face. I kept making faces at them when I would take a photo, to get them to laugh. Mom would mimic my face, hence her expression.

Me and Dad.

Inside Itsukushima Shrine.

It must be very beautiful when the tide comes in. I didn't research the tide times before we left. Whoops.... next time.

One of the walkways at Itsukushima Shrine, with Goju-no-to Pagoda visible in the background.

Me at the shrine on Miyajima, taken by Mom from the other shore.

Me, with the ever-present camera bolted to my arm.

And there's the face!

Guess who I ran into at the shrine?

A view from behind the shine.

Bowls for shaved ice. Japanese people love their shaved ice.

Crazy straws.

From Hiroshima JR station, we took a streetcar to Peace Park.

Streetcar ride to Peace Park. I think Mom was trying to provide air conditioning or something.

Funny sign on the streetcar.

Hiroshima City from the streetcar.

NO ONE'S DRIVING! AHHHHH!!! Ok, this was the back end, the driver was on the other end of the car.

Streetcar movie.

A cemetery beside Peace Park. We visited August 14. The atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 9.

The A-Bomb Dome.

Mom and Dad.

Okanomiyaki restaurant! Super excited! "My I take your order please?"

English menu. "Which brand do you do it for? How many dose a glass need?"

Okanomiyaki chef.

Okanomiyaki is "japanese pizza". It's fried egg, a crepe like base, noodles, a big helping of cabbage, and usually meat (pork). It's amazingly delicious.

Beer and okanomiyaki. My favorite meal.

Mom and Dad really enjoyed it!

Pretty sunset. Hard to capture across the aisle while traveling over 200 mph.
